Released in 1994, Disclosure is peak ’90s corporate erotic thriller: power suits, sexual politics, office paranoia, and Michael Douglas having the worst week of his professional life.

Based on Michael Crichton’s bestselling novel, the film stars Michael Douglas as Tom Sanders, an executive at a Seattle technology company who expects a major promotion, only to discover that the job has gone to Meredith Johnson, played by Demi Moore—his new boss, and an old lover.

Things unravel quickly. After Meredith makes an aggressive sexual advance and Tom rejects her, she accuses him of harassment, setting off a battle over reputation, power, corporate politics, and who gets believed. The movie flips the era’s familiar workplace-harassment narrative in deliberately provocative fashion, making it one of the more controversial mainstream thrillers of the decade.

Moore is the reason the movie remains so visually iconic. Cool, immaculate, and intimidating, her Meredith is pure 1990s power dressing turned into a weapon. Douglas, meanwhile, is perfectly cast as the increasingly desperate corporate everyman trying to prove that the official version of events is not the whole story.

The film also captures a very specific moment in technology culture, complete with virtual-reality interfaces, corporate intrigue, and the early-’90s belief that computers were about to make offices both futuristic and vaguely terrifying.

Its politics have aged in complicated ways, but that is also part of why Disclosure remains such an interesting artifact. It is obsessed with sex, gender, ambition, workplace hierarchy, and the fear of losing control—all wrapped in the sleek packaging of a major studio thriller.
