With a name like Dirty Sally’s, there was never much danger of confusing it with a respectable cocktail lounge.

Operating during the 1970s, Dirty Sally’s was a private gay men’s club in San Francisco during one of the most transformative periods in the city’s queer history. The decade saw thousands of LGBTQ+ people arriving in San Francisco, creating an extraordinary network of bars, discos, bathhouses, private clubs, bookstores, restaurants, and businesses where gay life could flourish openly.

Private clubs occupied their own particular corner of that world. Membership offered a degree of discretion and exclusivity while providing a dedicated place for men to meet, socialize, and cruise. Their wonderfully suggestive names and advertisements also reflected the newfound confidence of the post-Stonewall era—less coded, less apologetic, and considerably more fun.

Dirty Sally’s belonged to the San Francisco of leather and Levi’s, Castro clones, motorcycles, disco, and sexual liberation, when queer establishments weren't simply nightlife businesses but part of the infrastructure of a rapidly growing community.

Like many smaller clubs from the period, much of its history survives through old advertisements, membership cards, photographs, and other pieces of gay ephemera rather than a detailed historical record. That makes the original graphics particularly worth preserving: small artifacts from places that were once familiar names but have largely disappeared from the city.
