From 1996 to 2018, The Denver Wrangler was one of the city’s best-known gay bars, with a strong identity built around leather, Levi’s, bears, and unapologetically masculine gay culture.

For more than two decades, the Wrangler was the kind of place where different parts of Denver’s gay community overlapped: longtime regulars, leather men, bears, younger crowds, out-of-towners, and anyone looking for something a little less polished than the standard nightclub scene.

The bar became especially known for its big social weekends, patio crowds, beer busts, leather events, and community fundraisers. Like a lot of long-running gay bars, it was more than nightlife. It was somewhere people met friends, found dates, joined organizations, and became part of a community that often extended far beyond the bar itself.

Its 22-year run took it from the mid-1990s through a period of enormous change in LGBTQ+ life, from the AIDS crisis and early internet era to marriage equality, apps, and a much more visible gay Denver. Through all of it, the Wrangler kept its own personality.

When it closed in 2018, Denver lost one of those increasingly rare gay bars that had been around long enough to feel less like a business and more like part of the city’s memory.
