Roger — Dawn of the Dead Tee (1978)
Some zombie faces you never forget.
Released in 1978, George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead took the zombie apocalypse out of the farmhouse and dropped it directly into an American shopping mall. Equal parts horror movie, gore spectacular, and savage satire of consumer culture, it became one of the most influential horror films ever made.
Among its most memorable characters is Roger, played by Scott Reiniger. Cocky, funny, and increasingly reckless, Roger seems almost exhilarated by the apocalypse—until a disastrous encounter with the undead leaves him bitten and facing the inevitable.
His deterioration is one of the film’s most effective sequences. The energetic, wisecracking SWAT officer slowly becomes pale, feverish, and barely recognizable while his friend Peter stays beside him. When Roger finally dies and returns as a zombie, Romero gives us an unforgettable close-up: chalk-white skin, sunken features, blank eyes, and a face that is unmistakably Roger while no longer containing any Roger at all.
That image also showcases the work of legendary makeup artist Tom Savini, whose blue-gray zombies, exploding heads, bites, and gloriously excessive practical effects helped establish the visual language of modern zombie movies.
Dawn of the Dead remains remarkable because beneath all the gore is something surprisingly human. Roger’s transformation isn't simply another zombie reveal—we've gotten to know him, which makes seeing that familiar face among the dead genuinely unsettling.
