Before TRL, before TikTok, and long before everybody was filming themselves dancing, there was Dance Party USA.

Filmed just outside Philadelphia and broadcast nationally from 1986 to 1992, Dance Party USA was essentially a daily teenage dance party put on television. Regular kids packed the studio floor in peak late-’80s and early-’90s fashion—big hair, acid wash, oversized sweaters, biker shorts, high-tops—and danced while the cameras moved through the crowd.

The show also became an unlikely stop for some very famous people. Madonna, Will Smith, New Kids on the Block, Debbie Gibson, Paula Abdul, Nine Inch Nails, and plenty of other artists appeared during its run, often before anyone realized just how famous some of them were going to become.

But the real stars were always the regular dancers. Viewers got to know them, copied their clothes and hairstyles, developed favorites, and watched the show after school like they were checking in with a particularly energetic group of friends.
