Cruel Intentions — Vintage Movie Tee
Released in 1999, Cruel Intentions took an 18th-century French story about seduction, manipulation, and revenge and dropped it into the polished, decadent world of wealthy Manhattan teenagers.
Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as Kathryn Merteuil, with Ryan Phillippe as her stepbrother Sebastian Valmont and Reese Witherspoon as Annette Hargrove, the supposedly unattainable target of Sebastian’s latest wager. What follows is a beautifully nasty game of sex, betrayal, blackmail, and emotional warfare.
The movie became an instant late-’90s cult favorite thanks to its glossy style, killer soundtrack, and willingness to let its young characters behave terribly. Gellar’s Kathryn, in particular, became an icon: perfectly dressed, perfectly composed, and almost always the most dangerous person in the room.
Its queer appeal is substantial, too. The film plays constantly with bisexuality, same-sex attraction, gendered power, and the performance of respectability. Kathryn’s infamous kiss with Cecile became one of the most talked-about scenes of the era, even if the movie’s queerness is often filtered through provocation and male fantasy. For many viewers, though, its mix of camp, glamour, sexual ambiguity, and ruthless female characters helped give it a lasting LGBTQ+ following.
And then there is the ending: betrayal exposed, reputations destroyed, and “Bittersweet Symphony” turning a teenage melodrama into something almost operatic.
