Crews Inn — Dallas, TX (1983–2009)

For more than 25 years, Crews Inn was one of Dallas’s longest-running gay bars—a neighborhood institution remembered for its unpretentious atmosphere, loyal regulars, and reputation as a classic gay cruise bar.

Operating from 1983 to 2009, Crews Inn offered an alternative to the larger dance clubs and polished nightlife destinations surrounding Cedar Springs. It was darker, friendlier, a little rougher around the edges, and proudly old-school—the kind of place where patrons could stop in for a drink, meet someone new, or settle into a familiar corner among friends.

Its nautical name carried the sort of playful double meaning that gay bars of the era did so well. The logo appeared on advertisements, matchbooks, and promotional shirts, becoming a familiar symbol within Dallas nightlife and a subtle souvenir for those who knew exactly what the name represented.

Crews Inn belonged to a generation of neighborhood gay bars that served a purpose far beyond nightlife. Before apps and online social networks changed how people met, bars like this provided a physical place to connect. Friendships formed, relationships began, newcomers discovered the community, and regulars became chosen family.

Over its remarkable 26-year run, Crews Inn witnessed enormous changes in LGBTQ+ life—from the early years of the AIDS crisis through increasing visibility and acceptance in the 1990s and 2000s. Through it all, it remained a familiar destination within Dallas’s queer social landscape.

When Crews Inn closed in 2009, Dallas lost one of its longest-running gay establishments and another link to an earlier era of neighborhood nightlife.
