Crazy Nanny’s was one of those quintessential early-‘90s New York lesbian bars — loud, scrappy, neighborhood-driven, and gloriously unpolished. Open from 1991 to 2004 in Manhattan, it became a longtime gathering spot for women looking for something more relaxed and real than the velvet-rope club scene. Karaoke nights, cheap drinks, birthday parties, breakups, hookups, chosen family — Crazy Nanny’s held all of it under one roof. Like so many lesbian bars of its era, it disappeared long before its cultural importance was fully appreciated.
