Before reality television figured out that putting attractive strangers on a boat was a good idea, there was The Love Boat.

Premiering in 1977, the series followed the crew of the Pacific Princess as a constantly changing collection of guest stars boarded for a week of romance, misunderstandings, cocktails, and remarkably complicated vacations.

At the center were Gavin MacLeod as Captain Stubing, Bernie Kopell as Doc, Fred Grandy as Gopher, Ted Lange as Isaac, Lauren Tewes as Julie, and later Jill Whelan as the captain’s daughter Vicki. They basically spent nine seasons watching other people fall in love while keeping the ship pointed vaguely toward Mexico.

And the guest-star lists were incredible. Charo, Florence Henderson, Andy Warhol, Carol Channing, Sonny Bono, Janet Jackson, Vincent Price, Cloris Leachman, and seemingly every television actor who owned a passport eventually wandered up that gangway. Half the fun was waiting to see who would appear when the opening credits started.
