The Go-Go's — Vintage 1980s Rock Tee

Formed in Los Angeles in 1978, The Go-Go's emerged from the city's wonderfully chaotic punk scene and became one of the biggest pop-rock bands of the 1980s. And they did it without sacrificing their attitude, their sense of humor, or their ability to get into a little trouble.

The original classic lineup featured Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte Caffey, Kathy Valentine, and Gina Schock, five women who wrote their own songs, played their own instruments, and proved that an all-female band could conquer the charts without being assembled by some record executive.

Their 1981 debut album, Beauty and the Beat, was a sensation, reaching number one on the Billboard album chart and making history as the first album by an all-female band who wrote their own material and played their own instruments to achieve that distinction.

And the hits were everywhere. “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “We Got the Beat,” “Vacation,” and “Head Over Heels” became defining songs of the decade, combining irresistible pop melodies with the energy and irreverence of their punk beginnings.

But behind the sunny California sound was a band that was considerably wilder than their cheerful music videos suggested. The Go-Go's were notorious for their partying, backstage misbehavior, and enthusiastic embrace of rock-and-roll excess. They weren't manufactured pop princesses. They were punk girls who happened to become enormously famous.

They also became beloved figures in queer pop culture, particularly through their connection to the Los Angeles punk and new-wave scenes, their playful approach to femininity, and the enduring gay-icon status of Belinda Carlisle and Jane Wiedlin. Their music was practically made for dancing around your bedroom while getting ready to go out.
