Elizabeth Taylor — White Diamonds Vintage Promo Tee
Elizabeth Taylor selling perfume was never going to be a subtle affair.
Launched in 1991, White Diamonds became one of the most successful celebrity fragrances of all time, with Elizabeth Taylor bringing her particular brand of old Hollywood glamour to an industry that would soon be flooded with celebrity perfumes.
And who better to sell a fragrance called White Diamonds than a woman famous for owning some of the most spectacular jewelry in the world? Taylor had already spent decades collecting husbands, Oscars, headlines, and enormous gemstones. Perfume was practically inevitable.
The advertising was magnificent. Big hair, diamonds, white satin, dramatic lighting, and Elizabeth looking like she'd just stepped out of a particularly expensive 1950s melodrama. The famous television commercial featured Taylor at a glamorous gathering, removing one of her diamond earrings and declaring, “These have always brought me luck.” It was ridiculous, fabulous, and completely perfect.
By the 1990s, Elizabeth Taylor had become something even bigger than a movie star. She was a gay icon, AIDS activist, beauty mogul, and unapologetic symbol of old-school Hollywood excess. At a time when many celebrities remained silent about HIV/AIDS, Taylor was using her fame, money, and considerable influence to raise awareness and fight for people the rest of the world was often happy to ignore.
And White Diamonds was everywhere. Department-store perfume counters, glossy magazine advertisements, television commercials, holiday gift sets, and dressing tables across America. It was less a fragrance than an entire lifestyle involving diamonds, shoulder pads, and absolutely no intention of aging quietly.
