San Francisco — Vintage 1980s Tourist Tee
San Francisco in the 1980s. Cable cars, crooked streets, outrageous rent, and more fabulous people than most cities knew what to do with.
By the 1980s, San Francisco had become one of the most recognizable cities in America. The Golden Gate Bridge, Victorian houses, Fisherman's Wharf, and those impossibly steep hills made it a tourist's dream. And naturally, no visit was complete without buying a souvenir T-shirt.
The city's souvenir shops were packed with colorful graphics, oversized lettering, and cheerful illustrations promising a little piece of California to take home. The shirts were bright, proudly touristy, and wonderfully unconcerned with subtlety.
But San Francisco had another identity that made it unlike anywhere else. The Castro District had become an international center of gay life, while Polk Street, South of Market, and countless bars, bookstores, bathhouses, and clubs made the city a magnet for queer people from around the world.
The decade also brought enormous hardship as the AIDS crisis devastated the city's gay community. Yet San Francisco remained a center of activism, mutual support, creativity, and resistance. Behind the postcard-perfect scenery was a city whose people were changing American culture.
