Club Swamp (Hamptons Gay Club/1976-2001)

Club Swamp—often just “The Swamp”—was East Hampton’s legendary gay nightclub, opening in 1976 in Wainscott and running strong for about 25 years. What started as a Sunday tea-dance hotspot became a chrome-railed disco haven, tucked behind privacy fences where LGBTQ+ community, laughter, and liberation thrived.

By the ’80s and ’90s, it was an inviting, barnlike space with a barn lounge, mirrored dance room, and courtyard where locals and New York visitors danced, chatted, and sparkled—an oasis in a conservative setting. Even its owner, Bill Higgins, lived a block away to stay close to the scene.

The Swamp closed in 2001, eventually becoming the Star Room and later demolished to make way for a small public park. Today, its legacy lives on through memorial efforts: markers around the old dance floor and pink disco-ball installations keep its memory shimmering in the Hamptons.
