Club Metro — St. Paul, Minnesota
Before the Twin Cities’ queer nightlife became increasingly centered in Minneapolis, Club Metro gave St. Paul a gay club of its own.
Club Metro was part of the network of LGBTQ+ bars and dance clubs that made the Minneapolis–St. Paul area an important queer destination in the Upper Midwest. For St. Paul locals, having a club on their side of the river meant a night of drinking, dancing, cruising, and familiar faces without automatically heading into downtown Minneapolis.
Like so many gay clubs of its era, Metro served a purpose considerably larger than its dance floor. Before dating apps and social media, bars were where LGBTQ+ people found one another—where you heard about parties, met a boyfriend, joined a softball team, discovered Pride events, or simply walked into a room knowing you weren't the only gay person in town.
