Charo — Vintage 1970s Souvenir Tee
Few personalities could fill a television screen quite like Charo.
During the 1970s, Charo seemed to be everywhere—variety shows, talk shows, The Love Boat, Las Vegas stages, and celebrity specials—usually arriving in a blur of sequins, enormous hair, rapid-fire jokes, and her unmistakable “Cuchi-Cuchi!”
Born María del Rosario Pilar Martínez Molina Baeza in Spain, Charo was far more than the deliberately exaggerated personality American television audiences came to know. A gifted classical and flamenco guitarist, she studied under Andrés Segovia and became an accomplished musician whose technical ability was sometimes overshadowed by the outrageous character she so brilliantly created.
That contradiction is part of what makes Charo such an enduring icon. She understood camp before mainstream America had much of a word for it: glamorous, excessive, sexy, funny, and completely in on the joke. Not surprisingly, generations of LGBTQ+ audiences embraced her.
