Premiering as a series in 1982, Cagney & Lacey was one of television’s most important police dramas—and one of the first to put two women cops at the center of the story without turning either of them into a novelty.
Sharon Gless starred as Christine Cagney, ambitious, independent, stylish, and determined to prove herself in a male-dominated department. Tyne Daly played Mary Beth Lacey, a working mother balancing police work with marriage, children, money, exhaustion, and everything waiting for her when the shift ended.
Their differences made the show work. Cagney was single and career-driven; Lacey was married and deeply rooted in family life. Neither woman was presented as the “right” way to be. Their friendship, arguments, loyalty, and mutual respect gave the series an emotional depth that set it apart from most cop shows of the era.
The show also tackled subjects television often avoided or softened, including sexism, alcoholism, abortion, domestic violence, rape, racism, breast cancer, and workplace discrimination. It could be tough, funny, political, and deeply personal without losing the chemistry between its two leads.
There is plenty of queer appeal in that relationship, too. Two strong women building a life of trust and chosen-family intimacy inside a macho institution gave generations of lesbian and gay viewers something to connect with, even though the series was not explicitly queer. Cagney’s independent style and refusal to fit conventional expectations only added to that following.
Running for seven seasons, Cagney & Lacey became a landmark in women-centered television and won multiple Emmys along the way, including repeated acting wins for both Gless and Daly.
