Cadillac Lounge — Pioneer Gay Bar (Cleveland, Ohio)

One of Cleveland’s first and most historically significant gay bars, Cadillac Lounge opened in 1946 at the corner of East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue in the Schofield Building, becoming an early gay-friendly nightlife destination in a time when most queer social life was hidden or underground. It was opened by nightlife entrepreneur Gloria Lenihan, who ran several clubs in the city with her husband.

Inside, the bar was outfitted with mirrors, red velvet booths, blond wood paneling, and eight tropical murals by artist William C. Grauer—details that made it feel like its own world and not just a downtown watering hole. Though it faced occasional legal scrutiny, the Cadillac became a gathering place for live music and social connection, serving straight customers by day and gay men by night.

After 27 years of operation, Cadillac Lounge closed its doors in 1970, and its furnishings and fixtures were auctioned off. Its murals now reside in the Western Reserve Historical Society as part of the story of Cleveland’s LGBTQ+ nightlife.
