Neneh Cherry — Buffalo Stance  1988 Promo Tee

Few artists captured the rebellious, genre-bending spirit of the late 1980s quite like Neneh Cherry, the Swedish-born singer, rapper, and style icon whose breakthrough single “Buffalo Stance” helped redefine what pop music could look and sound like.

Released in 1988, “Buffalo Stance” was an irresistible collision of hip-hop, dance music, electro, pop, and street culture. With its booming beats, playful rap verses, and unforgettable chorus, the song sounded like practically nothing else on the radio.

And Neneh looked like nobody else, either.

With her oversized bomber jackets, gold jewelry, leggings, sneakers, and wonderfully effortless attitude, Cherry became an instant fashion icon. Her look mixed New York street style, London club culture, and a distinctly individual sense of cool that couldn't have been manufactured by a record company.

She wasn't interested in being a conventional pop princess.

And thank goodness for that.

The title “Buffalo Stance” referenced the Buffalo collective, a loose creative movement surrounding British stylist Ray Petri, whose groundbreaking work brought together fashion, music, photography, and street culture during the 1980s.

The Buffalo aesthetic embraced an unconventional mix of sportswear, tailoring, military clothing, and multicultural influences, challenging traditional ideas of beauty, gender, and fashion.

Neneh was closely connected to that world, and “Buffalo Stance” became its unofficial anthem.

The song itself evolved from “Looking Good Diving,” a 1986 track by Morgan-McVey, before being transformed into Cherry's breakthrough hit with the help of producers including Tim Simenon of Bomb the Bass.

It became an international sensation, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart.

And then there was that video.

Directed by Johan Renck, the “Buffalo Stance” music video perfectly captured the energy of the period, combining bold graphics, streetwear, dance moves, and Neneh's magnetic personality into a visual statement that still looks remarkably fresh.

Even more remarkable, Cherry was pregnant when she performed the song on Top of the Pops, defiantly rejecting the industry's expectations of how a female pop star was supposed to look or behave.

Her debut album, Raw Like Sushi, followed in 1989, delivering a wonderfully eclectic mix of hip-hop, funk, soul, and dance music that established her as one of the decade's most distinctive new artists.
