Boots – Studio City, CA (1979–1980)

12319 Ventura Blvd — Leather & Dance Bar

For just a brief, blazing moment at the end of the 1970s, Boots stood on Ventura Boulevard in Studio City as part of the San Fernando Valley’s secret LGBTQ+ nightlife history. It was one of several queer bars that occupied the block — including The Frat House, New World, and Beverly Shaw’s Club Laurel — but Boots carried its own energy: leather-friendly, dance-oriented, and emblematic of late-decade gay club experimentation outside the usual West Hollywood or Hollywood corridors.

Boots opened around 1979 and is documented in queer nightlife maps as operating until about 1980 — a short run, but one that left a footprint preserved in matchbook collections and local lore. In an era when LGBTQ spaces in the Valley were rare and often ephemeral, Boots offered a place to gather, dance, and connect with others in an atmosphere that leaned toward the leather and nightlife scenes of the time.
