BLACK.
A gay leather bar that embraced the hard-edged aesthetic of Europe’s leather scene, BLACK drew men who understood the code: boots, denim, harnesses, and the unmistakable shine of black leather. Bars like this formed the backbone of the international leather subculture that grew in major cities after the mid-20th century.
In a district already known for nightlife excess, BLACK stood out for its atmosphere.
Hamburg has long been one of Germany’s most important LGBTQ nightlife cities, with a gay scene that flourished again after World War II despite earlier repression.
