Bench and Bar — Oakland, California

For decades, Bench and Bar was one of the best-known gay bars in Oakland and an especially important gathering place for the East Bay’s Black LGBTQ+ community.

Originally opened in 1978, Bench and Bar became a downtown Oakland institution, offering dancing, drag, DJs, drinks, and community without requiring a trip across the Bay to San Francisco. Its crowd reflected Oakland itself—diverse, energetic, and proudly its own. The club became particularly known as a welcoming space for Black gay men and women at a time when racism could still be encountered within supposedly inclusive LGBTQ+ nightlife.

The bar changed locations over the years and eventually evolved into Club BNB, a larger nightclub incarnation of the original Bench and Bar. Under that name, it continued the tradition with packed dance nights, drag shows, Pride celebrations, and community events, remaining an important fixture in Oakland queer nightlife into the 2000s.
