PANSY BEAT — Gay Zine Cover Tee (1980s and 1990s)
Raw, xeroxed, and unapologetically loud, PANSY BEAT came out of the 1990s queer underground with the energy of a stapled riot. Part zine, part manifesto, part middle finger, it belonged to the same DIY lineage as punk flyers, riot grrrl pamphlets, and ACT UP graphics—cheap to make, urgent to read, and never asking permission.
Gay zines like PANSY BEAT existed because mainstream media didn’t reflect queer rage, desire, humor, or politics honestly. They were traded at shows, bars, bookstores, and marches, carrying essays, art, sex, music, and anger in equal measure. The word pansy was reclaimed aggressively, turned from slur into weapon, humor into defiance.
