Aged in Wood — All About Eve Vintage 1950 Hollywood Tee

Few films have captured the deliciously vicious world of show business quite like All About Eve (1950), Joseph L. Mankiewicz's legendary Hollywood classic starring Bette Davis as the formidable Broadway actress Margo Channing.

And at the center of Margo's theatrical universe is a fictional play with a wonderfully memorable title: Aged in Wood.

In the film, Margo is an established Broadway star whose career, friendships, and romantic life are threatened by Eve Harrington, an apparently innocent young admirer played by Anne Baxter. Eve presents herself as Margo's most devoted fan, but beneath that sweet exterior lies an ambitious schemer determined to become a star herself.

And she'll do just about anything to get there.

Aged in Wood is the Broadway production in which Margo is starring when Eve enters her life. Written by Margo's friend Lloyd Richards, the play becomes an important part of the film's backstage intrigue as Eve gradually works her way into Margo's inner circle.

The title itself is particularly amusing, considering one of Margo's greatest insecurities: getting older in an industry obsessed with youth.

At 40, Margo is beginning to question her place in the theater, her relationship with younger director Bill Sampson, and whether the roles she has spent her life playing still make sense for her.

Naturally, she handles these concerns with cigarettes, cocktails, magnificent gowns, and some of the sharpest dialogue ever written for the screen.

And nobody could deliver that dialogue quite like Bette Davis.

Although Davis was already a major Hollywood star, All About Eve became one of her defining performances, earning her an Academy Award nomination and introducing audiences to a character whose combination of vulnerability, sarcasm, and theatrical grandeur would make her a permanent gay icon.

The film also featured an extraordinary supporting cast, including Celeste Holm, George Sanders, Thelma Ritter, and a young Marilyn Monroe in one of her early screen appearances.

Released in 1950, All About Eve received a record 14 Academy Award nominations and won six Oscars, including Best Picture.

But its cultural influence goes far beyond the awards.

With its razor-sharp dialogue, theatrical personalities, elaborate betrayals, and gloriously excessive emotional confrontations, the film became essential viewing for generations of gay men and lovers of classic Hollywood camp.

Margo Channing wasn't simply a movie character. She was an attitude.
