International Mr. Leather 1996

Since 1979, International Mr. Leather has been one of the biggest and most recognizable institutions in gay leather culture.

Founded in Chicago, IML grew out of the city’s leather-bar and motorcycle-club scene and quickly became much more than a title contest. What started as a gathering of leathermen evolved into a major international weekend of contests, parties, vendors, fundraisers, and community events drawing people from around the world.

The title itself carries a particular kind of history. Mr. Leather contestants weren’t just competing on looks—they represented bars, clubs, cities, and regional communities, often serving afterward as ambassadors, fundraisers, organizers, and visible figures within the leather world.

IML also helped preserve and expand the visual language of gay leather: black leather, harnesses, boots, caps, motorcycles, denim, uniforms, and unapologetic masculinity. For decades, those images have been part fashion, part fetish, part identity, and part community flag.
