Glorious Health & Amusements (aka Glory Hole) was more than a bathhouse—it was a queer sanctuary and underground art space in Northeast DC, known for its 24/7 steam rooms, glory holes, and an unexpected gallery vibe. Founded in 1979, it persevered through neighborhood rezoning, temporary shutdowns, and even a 2007 closure due to code issues. In 2024, a serious fire—ruled arson—drove its final closure.
Dark corners hid connection; outdoor patios offered respite; and despite the gritty reputation, it was also celebrated for its raw community energy and memorable moments . “Filthy but beautiful,” one review noted—a fitting legacy for a place that thrived on boundary-pushing and unapologetic queer desire .
