And among its more wonderfully named establishments was Mr. Fat Fingers, a gay bar located at 5749 North 7th Street.

And really, with a name like that, how could you not be curious?

Mr. Fat Fingers belonged to the world of independent gay neighborhood bars, the kind of places that helped build queer communities long before rainbow flags, dating apps, and corporate-sponsored Pride celebrations became commonplace.

These establishments weren't necessarily glamorous nightclubs with elaborate lighting and celebrity DJs. Often, their appeal was considerably simpler: a familiar bartender, a cold drink, a good jukebox, and a room full of men who understood one another.

And perhaps a little cruising.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Phoenix's gay community was developing its own network of bars, clubs, bookstores, and social spaces. In a city with a politically conservative reputation, these establishments offered something especially important: places where gay men could gather without having to constantly explain or conceal who they were.

Phoenix's Central Avenue and Seventh Street corridors became part of that evolving nightlife geography, with gay-owned and gay-friendly businesses helping establish the foundations of the city's LGBTQ community.

But what makes Mr. Fat Fingers especially memorable is that magnificent name.

Vintage gay bars had a particular talent for choosing names that sounded innocent enough to outsiders while offering a completely different interpretation to anyone familiar with the clientele.

And Mr. Fat Fingers certainly wasn't leaving much to the imagination.

It belongs in the same wonderfully irreverent tradition as the many leather bars, neighborhood taverns, and cruising spots whose names relied on masculine imagery, sexual innuendo, and a healthy disregard for conventional good taste.

That sense of humor was an important part of gay culture. In a world that frequently treated homosexuality as something shameful, gay men created their own language of jokes, double meanings, and unapologetically suggestive imagery.

Sometimes the joke was subtle.

This was not one of those times.

Like so many vanished gay establishments, Mr. Fat Fingers is a reminder that queer history wasn't confined to San Francisco, New York, or Los Angeles. Cities throughout America had their own bars, personalities, and communities, each contributing to a much larger story of gay life.

Printify
Athletic
