It was a world of rugged masculinity, cruising, cold beer, and men who weren't particularly interested in wearing sequins. Unless, of course, the occasion called for it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring the \u003cstrong\u003e1970s and 1980s\u003c\/strong\u003e, gay leather culture flourished in cities across America, developing its own bars, motorcycle clubs, social traditions, and wonderfully specific dress codes. What began partly as an appropriation of biker and working-class imagery became a distinctive expression of gay identity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd Miami brought its own particular flavor to the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeneath the city's tropical tourist image existed a network of gay bars, bathhouses, adult bookstores, and neighborhood establishments that offered men places to socialize and explore their sexuality away from the scrutiny of mainstream society.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLeather bars were especially important because they provided more than somewhere to drink. They created a sense of belonging for men who identified with a particular style, attitude, and community. A leather jacket or a pair of boots could communicate plenty before anyone said a word.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd then there was the name.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMother's\u003c\/strong\u003e had exactly the sort of wonderfully unexpected humor that made vintage gay bar branding so memorable. It sounded almost wholesome, like a neighborhood restaurant or a place to get a home-cooked meal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNaturally, the clientele probably had something rather different in mind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat mixture of tough-guy imagery and playful double meanings is part of what makes old leather-bar graphics so appealing today. They capture an era when gay businesses weren't trying to look like mainstream lifestyle brands.
