And in Atlanta, Club Atlanta was part of that wonderfully uninhibited world.

A location of the legendary Club Baths chain, Club Atlanta belonged to a nationwide network of gay bathhouses that helped define American gay male culture during the 1970s and early 1980s.

Founded in 1965 in Cleveland, Ohio, by John W. Campbell, the Club Baths organization expanded into cities across the United States and Canada, becoming one of the most recognizable names in gay bathhouse culture.

And these weren't your grandfather's health clubs.

Club Baths locations typically offered amenities like steam rooms, saunas, showers, lockers, private rooms, and communal spaces, creating environments where gay men could relax, socialize, cruise, and enjoy themselves away from the scrutiny of the outside world.

The concept was simple, but its significance was enormous.

During an era when homosexuality was still widely stigmatized and gay men faced discrimination in almost every aspect of public life, bathhouses offered something that was often difficult to find elsewhere: a space where men could openly express their sexuality without pretending to be straight.

They were also remarkably democratic places. Once the clothes came off, the usual distinctions of occupation, income, and social status became considerably less important.

And in Atlanta, a city with a growing gay community and an increasingly vibrant nightlife scene, Club Atlanta was part of a larger network of bars, bookstores, clubs, and gathering places that helped Southern gay men find one another.

The bathhouse culture of the 1970s was also closely connected to the broader movement for gay liberation. Sexual freedom was an important part of the era's emerging queer identity, and establishments like Club Atlanta represented a rejection of the shame and secrecy that had defined so much of gay life.

Of course, that world changed dramatically with the arrival of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. Bathhouses became the focus of intense public-health debates, government scrutiny, and community discussions about sexual freedom, responsibility, and survival. Many establishments closed, and the once-expansive Club Baths chain eventually disappeared.
