But the city's reputation as a queer playground came after decades of struggle, and Chez Bud's was part of that history.

During the 1980s, Chez Bud's was a gathering place for Montréal's gay community, offering the kind of neighborhood atmosphere where men could meet friends, have a drink, flirt, and enjoy a little freedom from the expectations of the outside world.

But in 1984, Chez Bud's became the target of a major police raid. Authorities descended on the establishment and arrested a large number of patrons, with historical accounts reporting approximately 122 to 188 arrests. It was another disturbing example of the aggressive policing directed at gay establishments in Montréal during the era.

And this was 15 years after Canada had partially decriminalized homosexuality in 1969. Despite that landmark legal reform, gay men continued to face harassment, surveillance, and raids simply for gathering in places where they felt comfortable.

The Chez Bud's raid wasn't an isolated incident. In 1977, a notorious police raid on Montréal's Truxx bar resulted in mass arrests and sparked enormous demonstrations that helped galvanize Québec's gay rights movement. In 1990, police violently broke up the queer Sex Garage party, provoking further protests and becoming another defining moment in the city's LGBTQ+ history.

These weren't simply disputes over liquor licenses or nightlife regulations. They were part of a larger pattern of police targeting queer spaces, when a night out could end with arrest, public humiliation, and the possibility of being outed to employers, family, or the wider community.

And yet Montréal's gay community continued to organize, protest, open businesses, and create its own spaces. The city's eventual reputation for LGBTQ+ openness was built in part by the people who refused to disappear when authorities tried to intimidate them.

In August 2017, the City of Montréal formally apologized to the LGBTQ+ community for decades of police raids, discrimination, and the systemic targeting of queer establishments.

Printify
Athletic Heather /
