Western Avenue\u003c\/strong\u003e in Hollywood—and it was definitely not interested in becoming one of L.A.’s polished gay bars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Blacklite was a wonderfully unpretentious \u003cstrong\u003egay and trans dive\u003c\/strong\u003e, known especially as a gathering place for \u003cstrong\u003etrans women, cross-dressers, sex workers, gay men, day laborers, neighborhood regulars, and assorted Hollywood night people\u003c\/strong\u003e. It was the kind of room where different worlds that usually stayed separate somehow ended up drinking next to each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring the day, the crowd could be fairly mixed. At night, the Blacklite became much more distinctly queer, with \u003cstrong\u003edrag queens and trans women taking over the room\u003c\/strong\u003e. Drinks were cheap, the jukebox was unpredictable, and nobody was coming for craft cocktails or tasteful décor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was precisely its charm. While Los Angeles gay nightlife became increasingly slick and commercial, the Blacklite remained \u003cstrong\u003escruffy, inexpensive, welcoming, and a little strange\u003c\/strong\u003e. It was a refuge for people who didn't necessarily fit the increasingly manicured version of gay nightlife happening elsewhere in the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bar lasted until \u003cstrong\u003e2009\u003c\/strong\u003e, nearly twenty years after opening.
