With his elaborate makeup, outrageous costumes, bleached hair, and magnificently affected voice, he looks like the result of an especially reckless evening involving David Bowie, Alice Cooper, and a drag queen with access to an unlimited wardrobe budget.

And that's before he starts singing.

In the film, Beef is recruited by the sinister record producer Swan, played by Paul Williams, to perform music stolen from composer Winslow Leach. Unfortunately, Winslow has returned as the masked Phantom and is less than enthusiastic about hearing his compositions performed by a screaming glam-rock diva.

Beef's big moment comes during the opening night of the Paradise, Swan's extravagant new rock palace. Performing “Life at Last” in a spectacular Frankenstein-inspired stage production, Beef delivers a performance filled with exaggerated gestures, theatrical posing, and enough camp to power an entire Broadway season.

Then the Phantom intervenes.

Without spoiling too much for the uninitiated, Beef's performance ends with one of the most memorably outrageous onstage deaths in movie history. It's shocking, ridiculous, and completely in keeping with a film that treats subtlety as a personal insult.

Although Beef's screen time is relatively brief, Gerrit Graham's performance became one of the film's defining attractions. His exaggerated femininity, flamboyant mannerisms, and wonderfully unhinged delivery made him an instant favorite among fans of glam rock, midnight movies, and queer camp.

And Phantom of the Paradise itself is a treasure trove of that sensibility. Released in 1974, the film combines horror, rock opera, satire, and gender-bending theatricality into a gloriously strange vision of the music industry. While it initially struggled at the American box office, it went on to develop a fiercely devoted cult following.

For queer audiences in particular, Beef represents something irresistible: a man who is loud, excessive, unapologetically theatrical, and completely uninterested in conventional masculinity. He's a rock star, a drag performance, and a walking nervous breakdown rolled into one fabulous package
