(Replica 70's Lesbian Pride Tee/Rita Mae Brown)

An Army of Lovers Cannot Fail! — Vintage Lesbian Pride Tee

Before Pride became a month of corporate logos and sponsored floats, queer liberation had a considerably more homemade dress code.

“An Army of Lovers Cannot Fail!” became a popular slogan within the gay and lesbian liberation movements of the 1970s, appearing on buttons, banners, posters, and T-shirts. The phrase itself was much older, adapted from the line “An army of lovers shall not fail” in Rita Mae Brown’s 1970 poem Sappho’s Reply and closely associated with the feminist and lesbian movements of the era.

For lesbians in the 1970s, a shirt like this wasn't simply cute Pride merchandise. Wearing the word LESBIAN or an openly lesbian slogan in public could be a genuinely radical act. Women were building their own organizations, bookstores, newspapers, music labels, softball teams, bars, festivals, and political groups—creating an entire culture that hadn't existed openly a generation earlier.

The slogan perfectly captures the spirit of that moment. It's political without sounding like a committee wrote it, romantic without being sentimental, and defiantly optimistic about the idea that love itself could be a form of resistance.

And like so much great queer ephemera from the period, the original design has that wonderfully straightforward DIY 1970s screen-print look—the kind of shirt that might have been printed for a march, sold from a folding table, and then worn until it practically fell apart.

Printify
Black /
